How to Identify the Need for Denture Repair

denture repair Coral Gables, FL

Usually, you can expect your dentures to last about a decade. If you take the right care of them, you can expect your dentures to last a little longer. However, even with the most meticulous care, all dentures will need to be repaired at some point. There are several ways you can tell if your dentures need repairing. Read on to learn more.

Changes to the denture’s fit

Over time, a patient’s mouth will change and the dentures may not fit as well as they once did. If the denture feels looser than it did before or falls out easily, it may be time for a denture repair. This can be caused by either wear and tear on the dentures or changes to the patient’s bone density. A dentist can make changes to the denture to allow it to fit better. However, at some point, the dentures may need to be replaced altogether.

If the patient notices pain while biting or chewing, denture repair may be needed. Changes in the mouth can affect the fit, leading to pain. Another cause of pain may also be because part of the denture is broken and is poking the gums.

Broken tooth

If one of the teeth on the dentures has broken, the patient should stop using the dentures right away. If the tooth has not become lost, the patient should keep the denture and the tooth together. This will allow a dentist to place the tooth back in the denture. A new tooth can also be made up if it is necessary.

Denture repair for mouth sores

Dentures should never cause pain in the patient’s mouth. This is a sign of a poor fit or broken dentures. One example of problems from dentures is pressure sores. These happen when the dentures place more pressure on part of the gums than others. Denture repair will be needed if the patient develops these types of sores.

The patient’s gums should also not become irritated when wearing dentures. Inflammation, bleeding or raw spots are all signs that the surface of the denture may be too rough. If the patient is properly caring for the dentures and maintaining oral hygiene, then inflammation on the gums is a sign that the dentures need repair.

Proper denture care

With the right care, patients can prevent them from breaking. Patients should brush them at least once a day. While brushing dentures, patients should hold the dentures over a towel or sink full of water. If the dentures slip, they will not break by landing on a hard counter or sink.

Visit a dentist today

If you need denture repair, visit a dentist instead of trying to do it yourself. Household glues should never be used, as these glues are not meant to go in the mouth. You should also avoid denture repair kits because the glue from these kits can ruin dentures. Your dentist can properly repair your dentures.
