Compared to traditional metal braces that are clearly visible on a person’s teeth, Invisalign® braces are much more discreet and are essentially invisible from a distance. These aligners are made from clear plastic and are customized to fit snugly over a patient’s teeth, applying light pressure to straighten teeth and align the jaw. There are many benefits of choosing these clear aligners to enhance one’s smile.
Metal braces have been effective for years for treating orthodontic problems and helping both children and adults achieve a better smile. However, many people are self-conscious about how these metal attachments will make the mouth look during the time of treatment. While children may not mind the appearance of traditional braces, many adults prefer a more discreet option that does not disrupt their lifestyle. For many patients, these clear aligners can offer a more comfortable experience and a faster treatment period than regular braces, in addition to being more attractive.
It is no secret that the metal on braces can be painful when first installed and after being tightened, and the metal brackets can cut the gums. Invisalign® is not pain-free, but the type of pressure used to move the teeth with clear aligners often hurts less. Patients will experience some soreness during the first few weeks, but this should fade with time as long as the aligners are being worn correctly. Patients may also experience some scratching or irritation on the bottom of the aligner where the plastic meets the back of the gums. With time, the mouth should develop callouses in this area, and wax can be used to lessen the discomfort.
With regular braces, patients need to avoid several different types of food including chewy or sticky items and crunchy or hard food that can break a bracket if bitten into. With clear aligners, patients can simply remove the braces and enjoy whatever food or drinks they want. If patients feel sore they might want to stick with softer foods for the first few days after first getting Invisalign®, but there are no restrictions with these aligners.
Keeping one’s mouth clean can be difficult with metal braces since food can get stuck underneath the brackets, leading to tooth decay and other dental issues. People are often given threaders for flossing and a small brush for cleaning the area surrounding brackets. Since clear aligners are removable, patients can easily access the teeth for cleaning without needing special tools.
While the time of treatment depends greatly on the needs of the patient and how compliant the individual is with wearing the aligners, Invisalign are generally faster than metal braces. It takes on average 24 months for braces to straighten the teeth, while clear aligners usually take 12 to 18 months.
Invisalign® can make orthodontic treatment an easier experience for patients who would otherwise feel self-conscious about wearing metal braces. While there are advantages and disadvantages to each type of treatment, clear aligners can be the more discreet option.
