Bonding Sensitivity and Dental Veneers

You have probably heard about dental veneers as a way to cover up cosmetic blemishes with your teeth. Your transformation can improve your smile and help you have a good self-image. For most people, this process is pain-free and simple. Other patients experience sensitivity issues as the dentist bonds the veneer to the tooth. There are ways your dentist can mitigate these concerns.
What dental veneers do
While a crown goes over the top of a tooth to protect its structure and prevent further damage, a veneer attaches to the front of the tooth. A veneer hides cosmetic issues that people do not want others to see. Some of these problems may include discolored teeth, abnormally small or large teeth, broken teeth, cracked teeth, chipped teeth or misaligned teeth. Veneers restore the natural appearance of a healthy tooth.
What it is
A dental veneer is a thin porcelain sheet (or shell). The dentist or a laboratory technician will make the veneer to closely resemble the natural teeth in the patient’s mouth. It will have a similar size, shape and color of the other teeth so it does not stand out. It will remain virtually invisible.
Minimal discomfort
Most patients respond well to getting dental veneers. Because the dentist will use a local anesthetic, the person will be numb and should not experience much, if any, pain. The dentist will remove some enamel from the teeth and may have to alter the teeth so that the veneers fit. Through all of these processes, the patient should feel comfortable and at ease. After the procedure, the person can take pain medication, if necessary, though most do not need to.
The bonding experience
The dentist bonds the dental veneers to the teeth with cement. The dentist also uses a light to cure the cement so that it hardens faster. Occasionally, the patient will have some sensitivity during this stage of the procedure. For extra-sensitive teeth, the dentist may prescribe medication to help put the person at ease during the final portions of the veneer placement.
Sensitivity after getting veneers
For other patients, the discomfort comes once the dentist puts the veneers in place and the numbness has worn off. The patient may feel sensitivity while eating certain foods or drinking hot or cold beverages. The person should be aware of what brings out these feelings. Often, the sensitivity goes away after a few days. If the concerns persist, the patient should speak to the dentist about getting long-term relief from the irritation.
It can work for you
Even if you have sensitive teeth, you should not be afraid of getting dental veneers. A cosmetic dentist near you has the experience you can feel good about when you need a cosmetic solution for your teeth. Your dentist will be mindful of your needs and concerns. The efforts you make can be worth it when you see the transformation from an unsightly smile to one you have been dreaming about for years. You can say goodbye to concerning teeth issues and hello to an attractive appearance.
