Looking for information on dental crowns? The more you understand about what you need to do so that your oral health is always in tip-top shape, the better your chances of experiencing good oral health. If one or more of your teeth happen to be in jeopardy, then dental crowns are a common choice for tooth repair. A dental crown can help restore the integrity of your tooth by making it stronger, which means it is going to last longer. It is essential that you do everything in your power to make sure that your teeth last your entire lifetime, as that is exactly what they were designed to do.

About dental crowns

Dental crowns are also known as dental caps, as they completely cover a tooth in order to make it stronger. A crown can be used to repair a tooth that is weak due to decay, which is one of the more common reasons why patients choose dental crowns these days. Decay is caused by improper oral care, making it necessary for anyone who is getting a crown to provide themselves with proper oral care. Otherwise, their dental problems will continue. Crowns can also be used to repair a tooth that has been damaged due to things like blunt force trauma or playing sports, which can lead to one or more teeth being chipped or cracked.

Difference between temporary and permanent crowns

Temporary crowns – An experienced dentist will create a temporary dental crown for a patient when they are in need of a permanent dental crown in order to protect the integrity of one or more of their teeth. The reason why dental patients need to wear a temporary crown first, before getting their permanent crown, is because it can take anywhere between two and three weeks to fabricate a new permanent dental crown in a dental lab.

Permanent crowns – Once the fabricated permanent dental crown is made, it is sent back to the dental office, where the dentist will carefully place the newly made crown over the patient's tooth, where it will remain for anywhere between five and 15 years. The better the crown is taken care of, the longer it will last. Regular dental appointments are necessary in order to ensure that any crowns are still doing their job properly.
