Getting Veneers in a Smile Makeover

Your dentist might decide to include veneers in your smile makeover. A veneer is a tooth-shaped shell that is cemented to the front surface of a tooth. Its job is to hide any flaws on the tooth, and it can be used to drastically improve the way a person's teeth look.
Veneers are quite popular in Hollywood, and they are responsible for many of the smiles you see on the big screen. The appearance of a person's smile is one of the most memorable parts of their appearance. Not being happy with your smile can lead to reduced confidence and self-esteem.
Veneers can be used to address a variety of oral problems like:
- Stains that do not respond to teeth whitening
- Short teeth
- Crooked teeth
- Minor teeth alignment issues
How veneers can be part of your smile makeover
A dentist might add veneers to your smile makeover if you have any of the issues listed above. The process typically starts with a consultation. Veneers require the removal of small portions of enamel. This helps to create space for the veneers, preventing them from making the patient's teeth appear abnormally large. There are special types of veneers that do not require the removal of significant portions of enamel. These are known as no-prep veneers.
Prior to the installation of veneers, the patient's teeth will be prepared for the prosthetics. Portions of enamel are removed and the dentist takes digital images of the patient's teeth or an impression. The information is passed on to a dental lab that makes veneers. It can take up to two weeks for the patient's customized veneers to be ready.
Meanwhile, the dentist will fit the patient with temporary veneers. It allows the person to get a better idea of how their teeth will look with veneers, and it protects the prepared teeth. Once the customized veneers are ready, the patient will be called back in for another appointment.
The dentist will take off the temporary veneers and attach the customized ones. This completes the process of getting veneers and the patient's smile will be significantly improved. Dentists are most likely to recommend veneers for the eight top teeth in the middle of the mouth since they are the most visible when a person smiles.
Recovering after getting veneers
There is no recovery period after getting veneers. Patients might notice increased tooth sensitivity for the first few days after veneers are installed. That should go away after a few days. The sensitivity can be managed with a desensitizing toothpaste or mouthwash. Patients are advised to talk to a dentist if the sensitivity persists for more than a week.
Veneers do not require any special cleaning and they can be made out of stain-resistant materials, like porcelain.
