Non-Surgical Gum Treatments

Periodontics is something we specialize in at Gables Exceptional Dentistry in Coral Gables, FL.  This area of dentistry has to do with the care of your teeth when it comes to their actual structure. This includes the periodontium, the gingiva, the alveolar, and the periodontal ligament, to name a few. Our goal is to make sure you do not ever have to deal with periodontal disease, which is why we have a number of non-surgical gum treatments we perform to reduce the occurrence of plaque and hence reduce the potential of you developing gum disease.

What causes periodontal disease?

Plaque buildup is the leading cause of gingivitis, because of its tendency to build up most strongly in the area where the teeth meet the gums. This build up is something we can address non-surgically in our 33134 dental office.  We do so with regular cleaning, deep cleaning, and root planning. The first step is a professional dental cleaning. While your toothbrush can remove most of the plaque that builds up on teeth, it is often unable to remove the hard-to-reach plaque close to the gums and roots. A professional cleaning in Coral Gables, FL targets this plaque before it becomes a problem. Since plaque is made up of bacteria, it is important to have a professional dental cleaning at least once every six months in order to reduce the potential of decay or gingivitis.  To schedule one, call (305) 203-4132.

When you visit our Coral Gables dental office, we can also do a much deeper cleaning, known as scaling and root planing. Scaling refers to a periodontics procedure. Done under local anesthesia, scaling removes the plaque above and below the gum line by scraping it away. At the same time, we can also perform root planing, which refers to the periodontics procedure of smoothing out the rough spots on your roots. Both of these procedures are considered non-surgical gum treatments since your gums are not cut into. These treatments are performed in our periodontics office if we determine that the tartar, or hardened plaque, under the gums needs to be removed.

At other times, we may find that the non-surgical gum treatments do not work well enough, in which case, there are other options, including surgical measures, to resolve issues you may have with your gums and plaque buildup. The best way to reduce the risk of having a more serious periodontal condition is to visit our spa-like dental office on a regular basis for cleanings and inspections.
