Popular Permanent Tooth Replacement Options for a Single Tooth

Permanent Tooth Replacement Coral Gables, FL

If you lost a tooth, a permanent tooth replacement is important. You should not have to live with a missing tooth. There are both cosmetic and health implications for this. You may feel embarrassed and have low self-esteem. Plus, it can be difficult to eat a well-balanced diet when you have lost a tooth. However, you can take comfort to know that there are possibilities to replace your tooth and restore your smile.

Common reasons how people lose teeth

Teeth are strong enough to withstand strong forces as well as wear and tear. Still, teeth can suffer damage and even fall out under certain conditions. A hard blow to the face in an accident or while playing sports can dislodge a tooth. Biting into objects such as a utensil or using the teeth as an instrument to open items can cause tooth loss too.

Another way in which teeth fall out is due to poor oral health. People who do not brush or floss are prone to developing tooth decay or gum disease. In these conditions, teeth become weak or brittle. The deterioration can lead to loss.

Dental implants

A common permanent tooth replacement for one tooth is a dental implant. Though this can be financially more challenging than other options, implants are durable and long-lasting. An implant can last and do its job effectively for 20 years or more. These consist of a titanium post, an abutment, and a natural-looking crown. The patient will undergo at least two surgeries over the period of several months.

After taking X-rays and making impressions, the dentist will insert the posts deep into the jaw. Once the jaw has healed and the posts and bone have fused, the patient returns to the office. The dentist then attaches the abutment. A few months later, the dentist will place the crown on the abutment. Implants allow the patient to once again bite into most foods and have a complete smile.

Bridge

For a single tooth, putting in a dental bridge could be a good option. This is not as invasive as an implant but can still effectively restore the full function of the person’s mouth. To put in a bridge, the dentist will place crowns over the teeth adjacent to the gap in the mouth. This permanent tooth replacement includes an artificial tooth called a pontic, which goes in the empty space. A framework connects the pontic and crowns.

Partial denture

Another permanent tooth replacement is a partial denture. With this appliance, an artificial tooth (made of ceramic or porcelain) is attached to a gum-colored base. The base clasps over the teeth, and the artificial tooth goes in place of the missing tooth. The denture can be removable, but there are permanent options as well.

Find the right permanent tooth replacement

Replacing your missing tooth can help you feel good about your appearance again. You can also regain the ability to chew effectively. Explore these replacement options. Then, talk to your dentist to see which treatment is right for you.
