Smile Makeover Options for Teeth Spacing Issues

Your dentist might address issues like poor teeth spacing during your smile makeover. Smile makeovers are a combination of dental treatments that aim to improve the way that a person's teeth look. Your smile is one of the most noticeable parts of your appearance, and not being happy with the way your teeth look can lead to reduced confidence. A smile makeover aims to improve the way that your teeth look, which typically leads to therapeutic and restorative benefits as well.

Smile makeover treatments for poorly spaced teeth

Multiple treatments can be used to fix teeth spacing issues. The cause of the poor spacing and its severity often determine which approach the dentist recommends. Treatment options include the following.

1. Braces

Braces are the oldest way to fix teeth alignment problems, and they remain one of the most effective options. These appliances are fixed in place once they have been attached to the patient's teeth, making them a good option for children who might not be disciplined enough to wear aligners as needed.

Braces are made up of two main components: brackets that are attached to each of the patient's teeth and wires that connect the brackets. Tightening the wires leads to more force being applied to the patient's teeth. Braces work by gradually pushing the patient's teeth to a better alignment. Treatment with braces can last anywhere from one to four years.

2. Clear aligners

Clear aligners are the most discreet way to straighten teeth. It involves using invisible plastic aligner trays to move the patient's teeth to a better alignment. Improving the alignment of teeth closes gaps.

Patients use a series of aligner trays during their treatment. Each set is worn for roughly two weeks before being swapped with another set further in the series.

3. Retainers

These are typically used to keep a patient's teeth in their new position after orthodontic treatment, but they can also be used to address spacing issues. Retainers are less conspicuous than braces, but they are not as effective when it comes to moving teeth. This can lead to longer treatment times.

4. Dental implants

An implant can be used to fix gaps between teeth if they are caused by missing teeth. An implant is an artificial teeth root that is surgically inserted in a person's jaw. The artificial root serves as a base for a crown that replaces the lost tooth and keeps the wearer's jawbone tissues stimulated, preventing the bone tissue loss that takes place when teeth are missing. The installation of implants requires patients to be healthy enough for minor surgery.
