Teeth Straightening Options From Your Coral Gables Dentist

Many patients searching for teeth straightening options do not always know where to start. There are a variety of choices out there, all designed to fit specific needs and lifestyles. You may have heard of classic wire braces, but modern teeth straightening offers an array of other methods that are often less visible.

Reasons to get your teeth straightened vary from having gapped teeth, an overbite, underbite, open bite, crowded teeth and crossbite. Whether you want your teeth straightened discreetly or with the most bang for your buck, read on to discover our top orthodontic treatment options.

Teeth straightening options

Traditional metal braces

These braces have been around the longest and for good reason. Traditional metal braces are typically the most inexpensive and effective option for those who need big adjustments in their smile. Stainless steel brackets and wires are attached to the teeth and tightened at varying intervals throughout treatment. This shifts each tooth into its final straightened position.

One disadvantage of metal braces is their very visible appearance. Metal braces are hard to hide, and sometimes the wearer feels insecure about smiling or laughing. Traditional braces can sometimes irritate the mouth tissue, rubbing against the inside of the lips and cheeks.

Ceramic braces

Like metal braces, these appliances consist of brackets and wires, but they are made from tooth-colored ceramic that blends in with the natural color of your smile. A slightly more expensive option, these braces are preferable for those who want a mix of effectiveness and a more pleasing appearance. Ceramic brackets are also less irritating to the inner lining of the mouth. However, because of their positive features, ceramic braces do tend to be a bit more expensive in comparison to metal braces.

Lingual braces

This method of teeth straightening is completely hidden from the eye. Placed behind the teeth, these custom made brackets and wires are attached to the back of each tooth by dental adhesive. Keep in mind that although these are the most discreet option, they are also more difficult to adjust to and can be quite uncomfortable for a few weeks. Patients also might find that they speak with a lisp. Eating crunchy foods is prohibited, and the tongue may experience slight irritation. Wax can be applied to the brackets to prevent this.

Invisible aligners

These custom-fitted, changeable plastic trays fit the exact contour and shape of the mouth. The aligners hug each tooth tightly. Each set is meant to be worn for a short period of a few weeks, for at least 22 hours each day. The current set is then replaced by a new tray that offers a slight adjustment.

Invisible aligners are a great choice for patients who have a few teeth out of place, but are not effective for severe bite adjustments. Because of their nearly invisible nature, these aligners are popular with adult patients who desire a teeth straightening method that does not interrupt daily life and makes the wearer feel more confident.

Veneers

These thin, porcelain shells are made to cover an existing tooth in order to enhance its appearance. For teeth that are slightly out of place, a veneer can hide any flaws in the smile. This is a non-invasive way to get a brighter, straighter smile without compromising the actual location of your natural teeth.
