What is Tooth Polishing?

Has your dentist mentioned tooth polishing?

This last step of the dental cleaning process requires a dentist to polish the teeth using a special tool. On the top part of this tool, there is a small rubber piece about the size of a pea that spins.

The dentist will place a small amount of prophy paste. This can be compared to a thick toothpaste, but it contains many more abrasive qualities. They will then carefully go over all the teeth using this spinning tool. It not only polishes the teeth, but it also helps to remove surface stains.

According to the American Dental Association, you should choose how often to see your dentist based on your needs. This includes what services you want, your medical history and that health of your mouth.

The dental cleaning process

The goal of the dental cleaning process is to remove any plaque and tartar that sit on your teeth. If plaque and tartar stay on the teeth for long periods, it will eventually cause you pain or health problems. Two of the more common oral problems that plaque and tartar can cause are cavities and gum disease.

To properly clean the teeth, a dentist will use various tools to remove anything affecting your teeth. It is not painful if you are healthy. If you have poor gum health, then you may experience tenderness or bleeding as the dentist cleans.

Why is polishing teeth important?

After the dentist cleans your teeth, you may want to put on the finishing touch. It is like waxing your car after a thorough wash. Your teeth will feel smoother after your dentist polishes them. Moreover, this process also works very well when it comes to removing surface stains You might not need bleach to whiten your teeth if a simple polishing treatment does the trick. Compared to other dental treatments, tooth polishing is more about aesthetics than functionality. That said, it comes with some other benefits.

Teeth polishing benefits

Besides making the teeth feel smooth and freeing them of surface stains, tooth polishing has other benefits. Two advantages that come with this treatment include making your breath fresher and adding a shine to your smile. Because plaque and tartar are removed, you also reduce your risk of developing a condition that can affect your entire body. Bacteria can live in the mouth and cause serious health concerns.
