What to Do if Your Dental Crown Falls Off

Wanting to understand why your dental crown feels loose? Or maybe it has completely fallen out of your mouth? There a few reasons why your dental crown is no longer securely attached to your tooth. Some of the more common reasons including experiencing some form of trauma to the area, grinding and/or clenching the teeth and decay that prevents the tooth from having the tight grip that keeps it securely in place. A less common reason for a crown to fall out is the eventual breakdown of the cement used to secure the crown to the tooth.

Dental crowns save teeth

Finding out what to do if your dental crown falls off of one of your teeth is necessary when you have one or more dental crowns in your mouth. Crowns are a popular tooth restoration option that many people are choosing nowadays when they are in jeopardy of losing one or more of their teeth. Crowns are well-known for saving fractured teeth, severely worn down teeth, decayed teeth and teeth that have large fillings. While dental crowns are made in different types of materials, porcelain crowns are more commonly chosen due to their aesthetics.

What to do if your dental crown falls off

While the last thing anyone wants to happen when they have one or more crowns in their mouth is for them to become loose or even fall out, it does occasionally happen. The first thing one needs to do if they happen to find themselves in this situation is not to panic. There are solutions available that will allow them to once again have the benefit of wearing a dental crown. Next, they need to find the crown. More likely than not, the old crown can be reattached to the tooth.

There are some over-the-counter temporary dental cement options that can be used to temporarily attach the crown back in its proper place. While this option may work, it is important to understand that the crown may come out again when eating something chewy or hard. If the crown cannot be found or has accidentally been swallowed, then it is necessary to make a new dental crown for the tooth.

Is it a dental emergency?

For the most part, it is not considered to be a true dental emergency when a crown falls out of one’s mouth. If the patient is experiencing extreme pain due to the tooth now being exposed, then they need to relay this information to the dental office when they are making an appointment for crown repair.

Did your crown fall off?

Did your dental crown fall out of your mouth? It is most common for a crown to fall out of one’s mouth when they are eating, flossing their teeth and brushing their teeth. If you happen to find yourself in this particular situation, there is no need to worry. Instead, all you need to do is call and make an appointment so your crown can be replaced. Once you do, you can enjoy your good oral health once again.
