Even though dentures are tailored to each patient, there is a strong chance they may not fit quite as well a few months after placement as they did initially, since your jawbone naturally changes shape and gradually recedes over time.

Always Make Sure the Dentures Fit Your Teeth
During a process called resorption, the body draws calcium from the jawbone when it is no longer being stimulated by natural teeth. This calcium is then redistributed to other areas of the body. While tooth loss is a natural part of aging for many people, dentures can help slow the effects of resorption. However, because the jawbone continues to change shape over time, dentures will eventually need professional adjustments. Fortunately, modifying the fit of dentures is a straightforward procedure we offer in our office, known as relining.
In simple terms, relining involves reshaping the underside of the denture so it sits more comfortably against the gums. There are two main types of relines, hard and soft, and the right option depends on the patient’s needs. This process can be completed in our office or, in some cases, the dentures may be sent to a dental lab. Since each option has its advantages and disadvantages, consult with us to determine the most suitable approach.
Soft reline
A soft reline uses a liquid polymer material that is applied to the denture to add depth and create a cushioned surface. This added cushion is often more comfortable than a hard reline and can usually be completed quickly. In many cases, patients can receive a soft reline chairside, avoiding the need to send dentures to a lab or go without them for several days.
That said, a soft reline typically does not last as long as a hard reline and may require more frequent adjustments as the jaw continues to change. For some patients, this can mean additional visits and higher overall costs. We understand how important dentures are to everyday life, from speaking clearly to eating comfortably, and we aim to repair and adjust them as efficiently and effectively as possible.
Hard reline
A hard reline uses a material that closely matches the denture’s solid base. While both hard and soft relines serve the same purpose, a hard reline typically offers a longer-lasting result. Although some providers may perform this procedure chairside, it is often recommended to send the dentures to a dental lab to ensure the most precise outcome.
Because of this, a hard reline usually takes more time to complete. During this period, we will review temporary solutions and help determine the most appropriate option based on the patient’s needs. Relining dentures is not something that should be attempted at home and requires professional care.
Relining is essential for denture care
Dentures typically last between 5 and 10 years, but their durability can be significantly shortened without proper upkeep. The best way to extend the life of your dentures is to follow the care guidelines provided by us and attend regular check-ups for denture maintenance. Denture relining can help patients continue using the dentures they are familiar with, avoiding the need for costly replacements.
