What You Need to Know About Sedation Dentistry
Many people want to get dental work done, but anxiety and worry keep them away. In these cases, we may prescribe an oral sedative the patient can take before their appointment to help them relax. We also offer nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, during treatment to keep a patient from experiencing anxiety. While oral sedation and nitrous oxide are not pain killers, they work to relax the body so a patient can remain calm while having their teeth cleaned or undergoing dental treatment. Nitrous oxide is safe for children and adults, which means we can offer sedation dentistry to all our Coral Gables patients to keep them comfortable.
Types of Sedation Dentistry
There are various levels and types of sedation dentistry. During your initial consultation, we will discuss the recommended procedure with you, along with any anxiety you may have. Based on your level of fear, we will recommend a type of sedation to help you feel more comfortable with treatment. The ultimate decision is yours.
In many cases, our patients simply need help relaxing and choose nitrous oxide because it is quick, effective, and wears off right after the procedure is finished. Some patients choose nitrous oxide to help them relax when getting their teeth cleaned since there is no actual pain associated with the treatment.
For a filling or other dental work, we may recommend a combination of nitrous oxide and localized pain medication. After numbing the surface of the gums, we can administer pain medication to numb the area we need to treat. We can administer more medication as needed throughout the treatment, and only that specific area will remain numb. The benefit of this type of sedation is how localized it is. For example, for a cavity on one side of the mouth, the other side will remain fully functional.
