Bringing Smiles & Hope To The Dominican Republic
The end of summer marked a milestone for Dr. Amador: her first journey to the Dominican Republic for a dental outreach mission. Even more meaningful, she shared the experience with her daughter, Lexie, a University of Florida College of Dentistry student who helped plan the trip alongside her professors. Truly, it was a summer of firsts.
Reaching those in need
The team traveled to a remote region along the border of Haiti, an area where access to healthcare is limited. Dental care is only available for many residents when missions like these occur. During their time in the field, Dr. Amador and her colleagues primarily treated patients with severely decayed or broken teeth that could no longer be saved. Extractions were often the only option, providing relief from years of pain and infection. But once the team returned to their home base in Las Matas, they had the resources to provide more than extractions. Patients received restorative treatments to save teeth and, in many cases, partial or full dentures to replace teeth that had been lost long ago.
Restoring more than smiles
These transformations went far beyond oral health; they restored dignity, confidence, and joy. Two stories in particular stood out. One man, who had been without teeth for years, received a full set of upper and lower dentures. With Lexie’s help, his smile was completely restored. His happiness was overwhelming. He stood up, grabbed Lexie’s hand, and began to dance with her in celebration. It was a moment none of them will ever forget.
Another unforgettable experience came when two brothers received new teeth on the very same day. Both had lived without teeth for years. Sitting in separate chairs, they watched each other’s transformations unfold. When the work was complete, they turned to each other with big, brand-new smiles. The joy between them was contagious, filling the room with laughter and hope.
